Abstract: | Una estimación precisa de la resistencia del buque es esencial para la selección de los motores necesarios para alcanzar la velocidad de navegación requerida. En los buques tradicionales, la resistencia se descompone en componentes de fricción y oleaje. Además, en los catamaranes, debe considerarse la interacción entre sus cascos. En el presente estudio, se realizaron predicciones numéricas de resistencia utilizando OpenFOAM considerando el catamarán Cormorant Evolution, que presta servicios turísticos en las Islas Galápagos. Estas predicciones se compararon con datos experimentales publicados por Chávez y Lucín [1] y con series sistemáticas [2]. Se realizaron simulaciones a escala de modelo de 2 [m] en dos condiciones de carga, considerando configuraciones de semicasco y bicasco (S = 0,56 [m]), siguiendo el procedimiento experimental descrito en [1]. Se realizó un estudio de convergencia de malla con tres mallas diferentes para V = 1,05 [m/s] en condiciones de luz (T = 0,086 [m]). La malla convergente, con aproximadamente un millón de celdas. |
Description: | An accurate estimation of ship resistance is essential for the selection of the engines to achieve the required speed of navigation. In traditional ships, resistance is decomposed in frictional and wave components. In addition, for catamarans the interaction between its hulls has to be considered. In the present study, numerical resistance predictions using OpenFOAM were performed considering the Cormorant Evolution Catamaran, which provides travel services in the Galapagos Islands. These predictions were compared with experimental data published by Chávez and Lucín [1] and with systematic series [2]. Simulations were made at model scale of 2 [m] in two load conditions, considering demi and twin hull (S=0.56 [m]) configurations, following the experimental procedure done in [1].
