Abstract:
Conventional lathes, over time, develop failures in their speed-change systems, which hinder operation and may cause jams during adjustments, leading to unproductive downtime and the eventual need to replace the equipment.
The objective of this project is to retrofit a conventional lathe lacking its native speed system by integrating a frequency inverter, a programmable logic controller (PLC), and a human–machine interface (HMI), to enable continuous speed control during the machining of materials commonly used in the Ecuadorian market, such as structural steel and aluminum. Additionally, the project included the redesign of the belt–pulley transmission system. This proposal is justified by the need to extend the service life of obsolete equipment found in workshops that cannot afford to acquire a new or CNC lathe.
The results showed a functional system capable of reaching up to 1464 RPM in spindle and machining materials such as AISI 1045 and AA 6061, achieving continuous chip formation. However, due to the absence of a vibration feedback system, the machined parts presented poor surface finish because of self-excited vibrations.

Los tornos convencionales, con el paso del tiempo, presentan fallos en sus sistemas de cambio de velocidad, lo que dificulta la operación y puede ocasionar atascos durante los ajustes, generando tiempos improductivos y la eventual necesidad de reemplazar el equipo.
El objetivo de este proyecto es repotenciar un torno convencional sin su sistema nativo de velocidad basado en un variador de frecuencia, un control lógico programable y una interfaz humano-maquina, a fin de permitir el control continuo de la velocidad durante el proceso de mecanizado de materiales frecuentes en el mercado ecuatoriano, como el acero estructural o aluminio; además del rediseño del sistema de transmisión por banda-polea. Esta propuesta se justifica por la necesidad de dar una segunda vida a equipos en malas condiciones encontrados en talleres que no pueden acceder a adquirir un torno nuevo o CNC.
Los resultados mostraron un sistema funcional, capaz de alcanzar hasta 1464 RPM en el husillo y de mecanizar materiales como AISI 1045 y AA 6061, obteniendo viruta continua. Sin embargo, por la falta de un sistema retroalimentado de vibraciones, se presentan en las piezas mecanizadas un mal acabado debido a las vibraciones sobreexcitadas.
