Abstract:
This experimental study analyzes the mechanical behavior of Omega frames in a hybrid configuration of PRFV and marine aluminum, evaluating their structural viability for naval applications. The specimens were designed according to ISO 12215 and ABS standards and manufactured by hand-laminating fiberglass with epoxy resin. In the hybrid specimens, 1.1 mm and 2 mm thick sheets of marine aluminum were incorporated in the crown area, where the greatest stresses are concentrated, with the PRFV layers proportionally reduced.
The mechanical behavior was evaluated using three-point bending tests according to ASTM D790, recording force-displacement curves to analyze maximum load, deformation, and failure modes. The comparative analysis revealed significant differences in stiffness, crack initiation, and structural collapse between conventional and hybrid specimens, demonstrating the influence of metal thickness on damage progression. The specimens were 11% similar in structural strength to conventional specimens, despite having a 23% lower PRFV. The results demonstrate the potential of hybrid frames to reduce weight and optimize structural efficiency, providing valuable criteria for the design and manufacture of composite naval structures.

Este estudio experimental analiza el comportamiento mecánico de cuadernas tipo Omega en una configuración híbrida de PRFV y aluminio naval, evaluando su viabilidad estructural para aplicaciones navales. Las probetas fueron diseñadas siguiendo normas ISO 12215 y ABS, y fabricadas mediante laminado manual de fibra de vidrio con resina epóxica. En los especímenes híbridos se incorporaron láminas de aluminio naval de 1.1 mm y 2 mm en la zona de la corona, donde se concentran los mayores esfuerzos y reduciendo proporcionalmente las capas de PRFV.
El comportamiento mecánico se evaluó mediante ensayos de flexión en tres puntos según la norma ASTM D790, registrando curvas fuerza–desplazamiento para analizar carga máxima, deformación y modos de falla. El análisis comparativo reveló diferencias significativas en rigidez, inicio de agrietamientos y colapso estructural entre probetas convencionales e híbridas, mostrando la influencia del espesor metálico en la evolución del daño, presentando un 11% de semejanza en resistencia estructural respecto a las probetas convencionales, a pesar de tener un 23 % menos de PRFV. Los resultados evidencian el potencial de las cuadernas híbridas para reducir peso y optimizar la eficiencia estructural, proporcionando criterios valiosos para el diseño y la fabricación de estructuras navales compuestas.
